Having held them tight in my arms, sharing their breath and feeling their flesh and heart beating next to mine, HIV-AIDS robbed me of their love at a time where there was little known about the virus, stripping my friends of their identity and dignity. Even in death they were just a number, a statistics recorded in history. The last thing that they would have seen would have been their own reflection in the goggles or face shields warn by the nursing staff.
